Why we dropped IRC
- ๐No end-to-end encryption. Messages aren't protected the way modern chat expects; encryption was never part of the protocol.
- ๐งตNo history or sync. Nothing persists across devices or reconnects โ if you weren't online, you missed it.
- ๐No real push notifications. No clean mobile experience, so people simply didn't stay reachable.
- ๐ฉ๏ธFragile and fragmented. Netsplits, channel quirks and no discovery made onboarding painful.
- ๐งนIt was redundant. Running a second chat stack (Ergo + a web client) cost resources and widened our attack surface for effectively no users.
- ๐ฏOne home is better. Consolidating on Matrix and Discord means one identity, better moderation, and less to maintain.
